Bungie is introducing a temporary, roguelite PvE mode called Vault Breaker to Marathon on July 21, allowing solo players and squads to earn transferable gear ahead of a full PvE release in season 3.
Bungie is changing up the formula for Marathon with an upcoming mid-season update, introducing an experimental Player versus Environment mode named Vault Breaker. Arriving on July 21 as part of version 1.1.5, the limited-time mode sends players into the Cryo Archive for a roguelite experience that runs through August 4. According to reporting by Michael McWhertor at Polygon, players can tackle increasingly difficult vaults either solo, as a duo, or with a full trio to secure valuable Vault Data.
The new mode addresses a key piece of feedback for extraction shooters, offering a lower-stakes environment to earn gear. Players can use their gathered progress to upgrade their Sponsored Kit or purchase new weapons and items from the Vault Breaker Armory. Crucially, the gear earned in these runs can be brought back into other adventures across Tau Ceti. This update functions as a temporary stopgap while the community waits for the full dedicated PvE mode currently slated to arrive in season 3.
This shift comes at a critical time for Bungie, as the studio winds down development on Destiny 2 and navigates recent industry restructuring. Marathon remains a high-stakes project for the developer following its pivot into the extraction shooter space. By introducing flexible squad sizes and isolated PvE objectives, Bungie is clearly trying to broaden the game's appeal beyond hardcore PvP extraction fans and keep active players engaged during quiet matchmaking hours.
