Bringing Final Fantasy 7 Remake to Switch 2 Was No Walk in the Park, Says Director

In a recent interview with Polygon, Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the technical hurdles of bringing the game to the Nintendo Switch 2, noting the hardware's lower-end specs while teasing ongoing progress on the upcoming Rebirth port.

Bringing a massive current-generation blockbuster to a hybrid handheld is never a simple engineering feat, and Square Enix certainly felt the squeeze when porting Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade to the Nintendo Switch 2. In a recent interview with Polygon at Nintendo's New York City launch event, director Naoki Hamaguchi opened up about the technical hurdles of optimizing for Nintendo's hardware. While praising the system as an appealing platform, Hamaguchi noted that its specs sit on the lower-end side compared to dedicated home consoles, forcing the development team to carefully navigate performance constraints to deliver a smooth experience for players.

Despite those challenges, the team managed to deliver a remarkably stable port that captures the scale and visual fidelity of the original PlayStation 5 release. For Square Enix, this release represents a meaningful homecoming. The Final Fantasy franchise famously started on Nintendo systems before shifting gears with the original PlayStation release in 1997, and seeing Cloud Strife back on a Nintendo ecosystem closes a historical loop. Hamaguchi hopes this successful transition will pave the way for more mainline entries to reach Nintendo fans in the future.

The real test for the engineering team is still on the horizon, however, as Square Enix tackles the much larger, open-world scope of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for the same hardware. Rebirth features sprawling environments that demand far more from system resources than the more linear design of Remake. Fortunately, early progress sounds promising, with Hamaguchi confirming that the game is already built and currently going through the arduous optimization and polish phase. As cross-platform gaming continues to evolve, pushing dense modern RPGs onto portable hardware is becoming a defining trend for players on the go.
