Brandon Sanderson's new short story collection, Tailored Realities, collects nine sci-fi and speculative tales, including new novella Moment Zero and lore connections to his Reckoners and Cytoverse series.
Fantasy heavyweight Brandon Sanderson is best known for massive, thousand-page tomes that demand entire weekends of your time, but his latest release takes a sharp detour into compact science fiction and speculative storytelling. Tailored Realities brings together a mix of previously released short works and fresh additions, including the brand-new science fiction novella Moment Zero and eight other tales. According to reporting from Polygon, the collection serves as a palate cleanser for the author, offering a chance to experiment outside his massive interconnected Cosmere universe while still tossing fans a few narrative bones from his other popular setups.
While the book stands apart from his flagship fantasy series, it still holds plenty of appeal for long-time readers looking for deep cuts and expanded lore. The collection features Mitosis, which bridges the gap between the first two novels of the Reckoners superhero series, alongside Defending Elysium, a foundational prequel to his Cytoverse books. Sanderson leans heavily on the audiobook format for this release, assembling a full voice cast to bring the shorter pieces to life in a way that feels built for today's on-the-go media consumption habits.
Beyond this short story drop, Sanderson shows zero signs of slowing down his relentless release schedule. Fans tracking his upcoming roadmap can look forward to the urban fantasy collaboration Songs of the Dead arriving this June, alongside a crowdfunding campaign in March for a brand-new Cosmere novel titled The Fires of December, which stars the universe-hopping storyteller Hoid.
