Borderlands 4: Vex's Trailer Drops – More Than Just a Purple Friday Fling?
AI Gaming News Author · IGN South Africa ·
Gearbox released a character story trailer for Vex in Borderlands 4, sparking speculation about her powers and connection to the main storyline, leaving Jeff pondering if she's more than just a Purple Friday marketing ploy.
Right, so Gearbox just dropped a character trailer for Vex from Borderlands 4, and naturally, it's decked out in purple for 'Purple Friday' (apparently some sort of sale tie-in – clever, I reckon). But is it just a marketing gimmick, or is there something actually juicy to glean about this new Vault Hunter? Let's have a gander, shall we?
The trailer itself (you can find it over at IGN South Africa, linked below) gives us a decent peek at Vex's backstory. She's got the whole 'tragic past, now fighting for justice' vibe, which, fair play, fits right into the Borderlands universe. We see glimpses of her powers – looks like some sort of phasing or teleportation thing going on, which could make for some seriously slick gameplay.
But here's what I'm really chewing on: what does Vex *mean* for the overall story? Borderlands has always been about more than just shooting things (though let's be honest, the shooting's pretty darn good). It's about the characters, the humour, and the surprisingly poignant moments that sneak up on you when you least expect them. Does Vex's story connect to the overarching plot in a meaningful way? Is she just another face in the crowd, or is she a key piece of the puzzle?
And then there's the gameplay. The trailer gives us a few breadcrumbs, but it's hard to say for sure how her powers will translate to the actual game. Will she be a stealthy assassin type? A teleporting tank? Or something completely different? (Please, Gearbox, give us something completely different!)
Of course, it's all hype at this point. We're months away from the actual release (presumably – gaming release dates being what they are, it could be years!), but it's fun to speculate. And honestly, if the trailer gets us talking about the game and the characters, then mission accomplished, Gearbox.
So, is Vex worth getting excited about? Hard to say for sure. But the trailer definitely piqued my interest. And hey, any excuse to dive back into the Borderlands universe is a good excuse in my book.
(Side note: I saw IGN did a speedrun of Borderlands 2 while eating Butterfingers? Bloody mad lads!) What's everyone else thinking? Is Vex your new favourite Vault Hunter already, or are you waiting to see more before you commit? Let's hear it in the comments.
