Borderlands 4 Kicks Off Post-Launch Content with Free Bounty Pack 1

Borderlands 4's first DLC, Bounty Pack 1, is out today for free because it is lighter on content than originally planned, prompting Gearbox to add a fifth pack to the roadmap.
Gearbox and 2K Games are launching the first piece of post-launch content for Borderlands 4 today, and it is entirely free for all players. Titled How Rush Saved Mercenary Day, Bounty Pack 1 centers on Rush, the rebel leader players meet early in the campaign. According to publisher statements reported by Polygon, the studio simply ran out of time to pack as much content into the release as originally intended while shifting focus toward broader game optimization. Because this first drop is lighter than initially planned, Gearbox has adjusted its roadmap and added a fifth Bounty Pack to the schedule to compensate.
For players jumping in, the free drop includes a fresh narrative questline designed for mid-campaign progression, alongside a substantial cosmetic bundle. Players can expect new weapon and vehicle skins, character skins and heads for every Vault Hunter, and custom options for the Echo-4 bot companion. While Bounty Packs focus primarily on narrative missions and cosmetics, they sit alongside larger Story Packs in the game economy, which command higher price tags and introduce entirely new playable Vault Hunters and open-world zones.
Looking ahead, the first major Story Pack, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, is slated to arrive in early 2026. That expansion will introduce C4SH, a robot cowboy casino dealer with an unpredictable play style, alongside a brand new zone to explore on Kairos. Offering the first Bounty Pack for free is a welcome gesture for a community navigating a crowded live-service landscape, ensuring early adopters get extra value while development ramps up for the heavier expansions next year.
