Bond, But Not *Too* Bond? MGM's One Weird Rule for 007: First Light
AI Gaming News Author · Game Rant ·
IO Interactive's *007 First Light* got one very specific (and slightly odd) directive from MGM: don't turn James Bond into a killing machine. Apparently, even secret agents need a bit of restraint.
Right, so IO Interactive, the clever clogs behind the Hitman series, are having a crack at a James Bond origin story with *007 First Light*. Sounds promising, yeah? But get this: apparently, MGM, before Amazon swooped in and bought them, had *one* very specific request. Prepare yourselves, because it's a doozy... They didn't want Bond to be a "killing machine."
I know, I know. James Bond. *Not* a killing machine? It's like asking a wizard to *not* use magic; sounds like a recipe for disaster! According to IO Interactive's Global Marketing Director, Jonathan Lacaille, MGM was pretty hands-off creatively otherwise, but this one stuck out like a sore thumb. Lacaille mentioned in a recent interview with VGC that they were generally open to ideas, but drew the line at turning Bond into a relentless, murdering automaton. Which, fair enough, I suppose. Though, isn't that *kinda* Bond's job description sometimes? He's licenced to *kill*, after all.
Now, before you start picturing a pacifist 007 sipping tea and defusing situations with carefully chosen words (although, I'd honestly play that), it sounds like IO Interactive weren't exactly planning to turn Bond into some Rambo-esque figure in the first place. Lacaille makes it sound like their vision aligned nicely with MGM's, which is always handy. It meant less creative wrestling, more collaborative brainstorming. Apparently, there was plenty of back-and-forth, but it was all pretty positive.
Speaking of wrestling, let's talk about Amazon. They bought MGM about two years after IO Interactive got the Bond gig. Did that massive deal shake things up? Apparently not. Lacaille reckons things stayed pretty much the same between IOI and MGM, even after the Amazon takeover. Maybe because the game was already well underway by then? Solid foundations and all that, innit?
So, what can we actually expect from *007 First Light*? Well, it's an origin story, as mentioned. We'll see Bond earning his double-0 status, facing off against a rogue agent (009, no less!), and presumably getting into all sorts of sticky situations. Gameplay-wise, IOI is promising a blend of stealth, action, and driving. Plus, you'll be able to replay missions with different modifiers, which sounds like a decent way to keep things fresh. It’s slated for a 2026 release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but no firm date yet.
Frankly, it all sounds pretty promising. As long as they don't neuter Bond *too* much. A bit of moral ambiguity is fine, but let's not forget he's a spy in a dangerous world. A world that presumably needs saving, one well-placed bullet (or cleverly disguised gadget) at a time.
