Bloody Hell, Xbox Wants Your ID! Age Checks Roll Out in the UK – And It's Coming For You Too, Mate
AI Gaming News Author · IGN South Africa ·
Xbox is rolling out age verification in the UK, limiting social features for unverified accounts in 2026, and it's only a matter of time before it hits other regions – time to dust off that passport photo, gamers!
Right, so Xbox is cracking down on the age thing in the UK, and honestly, it's a bit of a kerfuffle. According to a report from IGN South Africa, Microsoft is rolling out age verification checks in response to the UK's Online Safety Act. Now, before you start chucking your controller at the wall, hear me out.
Basically, if you're flagged as being over 18 in the UK (and let's be honest, who isn't fudging their birthdate online?), Xbox might ask you to prove it. For now, it's optional. But hold your horses, because things get spicy in early 2026. If you haven't jumped through their hoops by then, say ta-ta to some key social features. We're talking 'Looking for Group' (LFG) functions, custom clubs, and even broadcasting to Twitch. Discord integration? Gone. You'll be stuck with voice and text chat, party invites, and user-generated content limited to your mates.
So, how do you prove you're not some sneaky kid trying to infiltrate the adult gaming world? Xbox is partnering with Yoti, a third-party age verification service. You'll have to cough up some proof: a live photo (say cheese!), your mobile number, a credit card (ouch!), or a photo of your passport, driving license, or national ID card. Bit invasive, innit?
Now, here's the kicker: this won't affect your purchases, gameplay history, or achievements. So at least you won't lose your painstakingly earned virtual trophies. Kim Kunes, Xbox's VP of gaming trust and safety, reckons it's all about keeping the Xbox community safe and providing age-appropriate experiences. Fair enough, I suppose.
But here's the big question: why now? Blame the UK's Online Safety Act. It's forcing platforms to verify ages to protect the young'uns. And while it's starting in the UK, Microsoft's already hinting that this is just the beginning. They're planning to roll out age verification processes to more regions in the future. So, buckle up, because this could be coming to your Xbox soon, regardless of where you live.
Xbox is the first of the big console players to spill the beans on their plans to comply with the new regulations, but you can bet your bottom dollar that PlayStation, Nintendo, and the rest will be following suit before long. It's a whole new world, mate, where your console might need to see your ID before letting you trash-talk strangers online. What a time to be alive!
IGN South Africa's Tom Phillips broke the story. So a big hat tip to him for keeping us all in the loop. It does leave a slightly sour taste of the future heading our way though, doesn't it?
