Bloober Team Announces Saw: Genesis Asymmetrical Horror Game

Bloober Team has announced Saw: Genesis, an asymmetrical horror game set after World War 1 where players can embody a Jigsaw precursor or try to escape his labyrinth with permanent match consequences.
The asymmetrical horror genre is getting another heavy hitter as Bloober Team reveals Saw: Genesis, a new multiplayer experience heading to Steam early access. Following their recent work on the Silent Hill 2 remake, Bloober is publishing the title with development handled by their subsidiary Broken Mirror Games alongside Anshar Studios. While Dead by Daylight remains the undisputed king of the space, this new project is taking a distinct historical detour by moving the torture-heavy franchise away from its modern cinematic roots and into the grim aftermath of World War 1.
In Saw: Genesis, players step into the shoes of the Judge, a Jigsaw precursor who views himself as a rehabilitator of humanity through pain and sacrifice. As the Judge, you stalk the shadows of a procedurally generated labyrinth using traps, noise-detection maps, hallucinogenic gas, and hidden corridors to hunt down three opposing players known as the Accursed. Unlike traditional power roles in similar games, the Judge is not invulnerable and must rely on cunning rather than raw force to manage the match. Meanwhile, the Accursed must scavenge for items and keys while dodging lethal puzzles.
The game introduces a high-stakes penalty system that forces split-second decision-making. If an Accursed player gets caught in a trap, they must choose between waiting for a teammate to pull off a risky rescue or permanently sacrificing a body part to escape, which severely handicaps their ability to solve puzzles and defend themselves for the rest of the match. Bloober Team plans to keep the title in Steam early access for roughly a year to gather community feedback and refine the loop before launching the 1.0 version. This shift toward live service and session-based multiplayer fits right into how modern players consume horror, where streaming potential and emergent social moments drive community engagement. By blending a globally recognized intellectual property with tactical survival mechanics and a period setting, the development team is carving out a unique identity in a crowded genre. As early access approaches, player feedback on the permanence mechanics and balance between the Judge and the Accursed will dictate whether this twisted playground finds a lasting home in the rotation of horror fans.
