Blizzard announced Diablo 5 for a 2029 release, revealing the Demon Hunter, Monk, and Plague Knight classes alongside a return to Diablo 2 inspired inventory management.
Blizzard shocked the gaming world at BlizzCon by officially announcing Diablo 5 for a 2029 release window, moving at a much faster sequel pace than the eleven year gap between the third and fourth entries. During the opening panels, the studio detailed the first three confirmed classes heading to the roster. Veteran favorites the Demon Hunter and Monk are making their triumphant returns alongside an entirely new addition called the Plague Knight, a dark combatant who weaponizes disease and pestilence. According to the development team, this lineup will be part of the largest starting roster in franchise history.
Beyond character builds, Blizzard also outlined its design philosophy for itemization, explicitly pointing to Diablo 2 as inspiration for gear that feels readable, memorable, and genuinely worth the hundred hour grind. Inventory management is also making a strategic return, with larger pieces of gear taking up multiple slots to bring a heavier tactical layer back to loot management. While the game is still years away from hitting PCs and consoles, these early design choices show a clear effort to listen to veteran feedback regarding progression and economy design.
Blizzard confirmed that development is still in its early stages, but promised regular communication with the community starting in 2027 to keep players in the loop on progress. In the meantime, Diablo 4 seasons will continue to receive normal updates and support while the studio shifts focus toward building the next era of Sanctuary. As always, keeping players informed this early signals a welcome shift toward transparent community building for massive live service ecosystems.
