Blizzard Teases Diablo 2 Inspired Level Scaling for Diablo 5

Blizzard has revealed that Diablo 5 will feature a new approach to level scaling inspired by Diablo 2, aiming to restore the satisfying feeling of outleveling enemies that was lost in recent sequels.
According to a recent roundtable interview at BlizzCon reported by PC Gamer, Blizzard is rethinking how level scaling will work in Diablo 5. Game director Joe Shely acknowledged that the automatic level scaling used in Diablo 3 and Diablo 4 can sometimes blunt the core satisfaction of progression. When enemies scale alongside your character, returning to earlier zones never quite delivers that rush of absolute dominance that action-RPG veterans crave.
While the team has not locked in the specifics yet, this pivot strongly points back toward the classic design philosophy of Diablo 2. This follows earlier hints from the development team about returning to more complex inventory management and deeper itemization, signaling a shift toward a more demanding experience that embraces deliberate player friction.
With a release window currently set for spring 2029, players have a long wait ahead before testing these systems firsthand. Even so, the early direction suggests Blizzard is listening to community feedback regarding player power, aiming to balance modern cross-platform accessibility with the gritty challenge that defined the earlier entries in the franchise.
