Blizzard Shuts Down Hearthstone 2 Rumors Ahead of BlizzCon 2026

Blizzard has confirmed that its upcoming BlizzCon 2026 announcement will not be Hearthstone 2, though a major expansion and new features are still on the way.

Speculation about a full sequel to Hearthstone can finally be put to rest. According to a recent report by Eurogamer, Blizzard executive producer Nathan Lyons-Smith has confirmed that an upcoming major reveal planned for BlizzCon 2026 is not a brand new follow up game. While a recent broadcast teased something bigger than usual for the September event, the team clarifies that the announcement will instead focus on massive new features and modes within the existing ecosystem rather than a standalone launch. Fans can still expect a major shake up, just without the clean slate of a sequel.

Before the big September showcase, the digital card game is rolling out its Cataclysm expansion on March 17. The upcoming content draws inspiration from the iconic World of Warcraft expansion, bringing back world shattering dragon Deathwing alongside the return of Colossal minions. Cards like the giant lava worm Magmaw will dominate the board by taking up multiple spaces and respawning segments, introducing chaotic new win conditions. The update also adds fresh keywords, story chapters, and the Rewind ability to let players retry pivotal plays. To ease the meta transition, Blizzard is making all cards from the Un'Goro and Emerald Dream expansions free to all players for the duration of the Cataclysm cycle starting March 10.

Looking at the broader platform picture, console and handheld support remains a hot topic for the community. While Hearthstone is still confined to PC and mobile for now, the team acknowledges that cross-platform availability is getting more internal attention under Microsoft. With BlizzCon 2026 on the horizon, players are keeping a close eye on whether accessibility upgrades might finally bring the CCG to Steam Deck, Switch, or current gen consoles.
