Blizzard revealed major reworks for Overwatch heroes Sombra and Roadhog at BlizzCon 2026, shifting Sombra to a Support role and updating Roadhog's kit with a new projectile-absorbing ability.
Blizzard used its annual BlizzCon showcase to reveal sweeping kit overhauls for two of its most historically controversial heroes, Sombra and Roadhog. Sombra is receiving the most drastic transformation, moving away from her traditional Recon Damage role to become a Tactician Support. Her famous hack has been replaced by the Hotfix ability, which heals allies and hacks health packs or enemy deployables, while her Virus skill is now Cyberspace to create a supportive, area-of-effect healing and weakening zone.
Roadhog is keeping his core Bruiser Tank identity, but his kit is getting some heavy tactical adjustments. The update introduces Trash Compactor as a third ability, letting him absorb incoming enemy projectiles and blast them back in an explosive counterattack. Alongside tweaks to his Scrap Hook perks, these changes are designed to force players to rethink their approach on the battlefield rather than relying on old habits.
Hero role shifts are always a major moment for live service games, especially when they target historically divisive picks like Sombra and Roadhog, who have spent years drawing bans and community debate. Game Rant notes that these reworks follow in the footsteps of past structural shake-ups like Doomfist transitioning to the tank role. As Blizzard prepares to launch these new kits alongside Season 5 newcomer Doctrine, both mainstays will require players to completely relearn their matchups.
To sweeten the convention news, Blizzard is also handing out a free Mythic skin to any player who completes a match during the month following BlizzCon. It is a welcome peace offering for a community that is about to watch two of the roster's most familiar faces change completely.
