A new StarCraft shooter headed by veteran producer Dan Hay is reportedly set for a major reveal at BlizzCon 2026, marking Blizzard's third attempt to bring the iconic franchise into the shooter genre.
Blizzard might finally be ready to bring StarCraft back to the shooter genre. According to a recent report from Windows Central, a new StarCraft first person shooter is slated for an official reveal this year, and it is expected to serve as the major headline act for BlizzCon in September. It will likely share the spotlight with upcoming expansions for World of Warcraft and Diablo 4.
This project first came to light last year through reporting by Jason Schreier in his book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. Schreier revealed that Dan Hay, a veteran producer from the FarCry franchise, is leading the development team. If this project makes it to launch, it will break a long history of cancelled attempts to turn the legendary real time strategy universe into an action shooter. Blizzard previously tried and failed with StarCraft Ghost in the early 2000s and a subsequent project codenamed Ares which was scrapped around 2019.
For players who have watched Blizzard shift its primary focus toward mega franchises like Overwatch and Diablo over the last decade, the return of StarCraft is a fascinating pivot. While the strategy community has spent years waiting for a proper follow up to StarCraft 2, shifting the IP into a shooter format makes plenty of sense for a modern audience raised on live service action games. We will have to wait until September to see what Blizzard has cooked up, but the prospect of stepping back into the Koprulu sector with modern shooter mechanics is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
