Blizzard is surprising players by adding Xal'atath to Heroes of the Storm, marking the MOBA's first new character in nearly six years.
Polygon reports that Blizzard Entertainment surprised the gaming community at BlizzCon 2026 by announcing a brand new character for Heroes of the Storm. Xal’atath, the Harbinger of the Void from World of Warcraft, is heading to the Public Test Realm next weekend before officially joining the roster on September 28. This marks the first new addition to the MOBA in nearly six years, following Hogger's release back in December 2020.
Blizzard officially put active development on the back burner in 2019 and stopped releasing new characters the following year, leaving the community with only occasional maintenance patches and balance updates. However, studio representatives hinted during the convention that Xal’atath might not be a standalone surprise. Depending on community reception, Blizzard is open to evaluating further hero additions for the game moving forward.
For players who kept the game alive through community matches and local tournaments, this update feels like a genuine resurrection. While Heroes of the Storm never quite matched the massive esports dominance of League of Legends or Dota 2 after its 2015 launch, its crossover appeal across Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and Overwatch carved out a dedicated player base. We will have to wait and see if this new content drop signals a permanent revival or just a nostalgic detour.
