Blizzard is dropping the number two from Overwatch and launching a massive yearly expansion model starting with The Reign of Talon, bringing ten new heroes in 2026, narrative faction wars, and a complete UI overhaul.
Blizzard is shaking up its hero shooter in a major way, dropping the number two from the title and officially rebranding the game back to just Overwatch. As reported by Eurogamer, this rebrand comes alongside an ambitious new update model that swaps out piecemeal updates for large, free annual expansions. The first of these drops on February 10 under the banner of The Reign of Talon, and it introduces five new heroes all at once across various roles. This massive drop is the largest single-hero release in the history of the franchise, and Blizzard plans to add another five characters throughout the year, bringing the total to ten new additions for 2026.
The shift in release structure is also breathing new life into the game's narrative side. Rather than relying on slow storytelling, Blizzard is structuring the lore around year long arcs split into six seasons, complete with a season count reset back to one. Players can expect cinematic shorts, animated comics, and in-game changes where maps permanently alter to reflect major story beats. The opening salvo features a five week faction war event called Conquest, where players choose a side between Overwatch and Talon to complete objectives, earn community points, and unlock exclusive rewards.
Under the hood, the update brings significant mechanical and quality of life overhauls to the overall experience. A complete user interface redesign introduces a 3D hero lobby that will eventually expand to support full party displays. The roster is also getting new sub-roles like Flankers and Medics, which add specialized gameplay perks to help manage the expanding character pool. For a community that has weathered years of shifting monetization and delayed PvE promises, this aggressive new roadmap signals a confident pivot back to what makes hero shooters tick.
