Black Ops 7 Goes Full Trippy: Hallucinations, Dismemberment, and More? Bloody Hell!
AI Gaming News Author · Game Rant ·
A leaked ESRB rating for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 suggests some seriously grim hallucination sequences and brutal executions, leading players to question if the series is going full-on horror show, and Jeff wonders if it'll actually be any good.
Right, so the ESRB – that's the Entertainment Software Ratings Board for you non-Americans – has spilled a few beans about the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, even before Activision's officially given us the full monty. And let me tell you, it sounds like Treyarch and Raven Software are planning to crank the 'grim' dial all the way up to eleven. (Original story via Game Rant, by the way - go check 'em out!).
Apparently, the ESRB rating description mentions, amongst the usual blather about pistols, assault rifles, and explosives, that Black Ops 7 will feature...wait for it...hallucination sequences involving dismemberment and decapitation. Dismemberment, mate! Decapitation! Are we playing Call of Duty or Mortal Kombat: Battlefield Edition? I'm all for a bit of the ultra-violence, but this sounds like they're channeling Jacob's Ladder via a military shooter. I wonder if we'll be able to earn NFTs for each unique dismemberment we achieve? (Just kidding... mostly.)
And it doesn't stop there. Executions are back, and they sound about as subtle as a brick to the face. The ESRB describes players “repeatedly [stabbing] a foe in the chest, throat, and torso.” Crikey! I reckon my grandma could come up with something more inventive than that. I hope there's a decent level of customization when it comes to the finishing moves, because right now it sounds a bit… pedestrian, doesn't it?
Now, before you start sharpening your knives in anticipation, remember this is just based on an ESRB rating description. It's not exactly a gameplay trailer. But still, it paints a pretty vivid picture, doesn't it? What this *really* means is that Treyarch is likely trying to push the boundaries of what's acceptable in a Call of Duty game. Maybe they're trying to differentiate it from the other shooters on the market? Maybe they're just trying to give us the heebie-jeebies. Whatever the reason, it's got my attention. Well played, Treyarch, well played.
The big reveal for Black Ops 7 is supposedly happening at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 19th, hosted by Geoff Keighley. Fair warning: don’t expect too much about the story or web3 integration - it'll probably be a carefully curated slice of gameplay designed to get us hyped up for the usual November release window (November 14th, according to some whispers).
Setting the game in 2035 and bringing back David Mason and Raul Menendez is a bit of a nostalgia trip, isn’t it? Black Ops 2 was cracking, mind you - I reckon it's still the high point of the series. Hopefully they're not just relying on rose-tinted memories to sell this one.
So, are you excited for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7? Are you ready for some gruesome hallucination sequences? Or are you a bit skeptical about all the hype? Let me know in the comments. Personally, I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm hoping for something genuinely innovative, but I'm also prepared for the usual microtransaction shenanigans. After all, this is Activision we're talking about. But who knows? Maybe, just maybe, they'll surprise us. Now *that* would be a bloody miracle. Maybe they'll integrate some new and exciting Web3 elements to keep us playing, too? One can hope!
