Polygon spoke with the VFX team behind The Mandalorian and Grogu to reveal how they used elephant seal behavior, Apple Vision Pro apps, and a Martin Scorsese food truck cameo to bring the Star Wars film to life.
Transitioning a beloved streaming show to the big screen comes with a unique set of technical hurdles, as Polygon recently detailed in an interview with the visual effects team behind The Mandalorian and Grogu. Bringing Jabba the Hutt's athletic son Rotta to life required Industrial Light & Magic to study elephant seal fights on National Geographic to anchor the animation in realistic physics. Even after building a physical puppet for the set, the team iterated heavily in post-production to ensure the character properly honored his cinematic lineage.
Director Jon Favreau also snuck a brilliant culinary crossover into the galaxy far, far away. Working alongside famous chef Roy Choi, the production designed an alien food truck operated by a four-armed character modeled directly after Martin Scorsese, complete with facial features adapted from the legendary director. This deep cut connects to Favreau's 2014 indie film Chef, proving that Easter eggs can appear in the most unexpected corners of a blockbuster space opera.
Filming for IMAX required a complete rethink of traditional action framing compared to standard Disney Plus episodes. Because giant screens fill the viewer peripheral vision so intensely, the visual effects crew utilized custom Apple Vision Pro applications to review live footage in virtual reality. This allowed them to pull the camera back during chaotic sequences, ensuring that massive set pieces like AT-AT clashes remained visually readable without overwhelming the audience.
