Battlefield 6 Ditches the Switch 2: A Missed Opportunity or a Bullet Dodged?

Battlefield 6 is skipping the Switch 2, leaving some gamers disappointed. But is it a bad business decision, or a smart move to focus on platforms where the game can truly shine?

Right, so the bigwigs over at Battlefield Studios, led by Vince Zempella, have dropped a bit of a bombshell (pun intended, naturally). Seems Battlefield 6, the upcoming military FPS that everyone's chattering about, won't be gracing the Switch 2 with its presence. According to Eurogamer's recent interview with Zempella, EA "doesn't currently" have any plans to port the game. Bummer for Nintendo die-hards, I reckon.

Now, Zempella reckons the core Battlefield audience is firmly planted on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Fair enough, I suppose. But hold on a tick... isn't the Switch 2 supposed to be a bit of a beast? Capable of handling some serious graphical grunt? (At least, that's what the rumour mill's been churning out). Is EA potentially underestimating the allure of a AAA FPS on a handheld? It's a fair question, innit?

I had a peek at Eurogamer's preview, and blimey, it sounds like Battlefield 6 is aiming for all-out chaos – "bombastic battles and a polyamorous partnership between boots-on-the-ground, vehicular, and aerial warfare," as they put it. Sounds intense, right? And they also confirmed the game is having open beta weekends on August 9th and 14th. Shame those on Switch 2 will miss out.

Of course, Battlefield 6 is packing crossplay and the Battlefield Portal – a souped-up map and game mode creator that lets players concoct their own madcap scenarios. Which sounds like a right laugh, if you ask me. But it doesn't really matter if you only own a Switch 2, does it?

So, is this a genuine strategic blunder? Or is it a calculated move to focus resources where they'll have the biggest impact? Is Nintendo's console seen as a platform for more casual gaming experiences, while Battlefield remains dedicated to being a big-budget, technically demanding experience?

Honestly, I'm torn. On one hand, missing out on the Switch 2's user base seems like a missed opportunity. On the other hand, perhaps EA knows something we don't. Maybe the Switch 2 just isn't quite powerful enough to handle Battlefield 6 at the level they're aiming for. Or maybe they just don't see the crossover in audience.

Regardless, it's a bloody interesting situation. It'll be fascinating to see how Battlefield 6 performs on its chosen platforms. And whether Nintendo's console will miss out on the hype – or whether gamers will just be happy playing Mario Kart instead. Source: Eurogamer
