Assassin's Creed Shadows is skipping a second major expansion after Claws of Awaji, with Ubisoft opting for chunky post-launch updates and crossovers for Year Two instead.
Ubisoft is shifting its post-launch strategy for Assassin's Creed Shadows, confirming that the game will not receive a second traditional expansion following the release of Claws of Awaji in September. Since the launch of Origins back in 2017, a multi-expansion roadmap has been standard for the franchise, making this a notable break in tradition. Associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois explained in an interview with creator JorRaptor that the team is moving away from full season pass style DLCs for Year Two.
Instead of another major paid expansion, Ubisoft plans to deliver larger, standalone content drops, drawing comparisons to the recent Attack on Titan crossover. While Year One focused on quick, reactive patches to address technical fires and player feedback, the upcoming strategy targets more substantial updates designed to pull lapsed players back into the game. Lemay-Comtois noted that these additions will be sparse rather than a constant drip-feed, aiming to shake up the experience with meaningful new activities.
Player reaction to the recent crossover content has been mixed across social platforms, highlighting the challenge of keeping community momentum alive without massive new story chapters. As Shadows prepares for an upcoming release on the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside other platform expansions, Ubisoft is betting that targeted, chunky updates will sustain player engagement better than a traditional DLC pipeline.
