Ascension Heads to Middle-earth With a Crowdfunded Adaptation Launching This July

Ascension creator Justin Gary is bringing Stoneblade Entertainment's hit deckbuilder to Middle-earth with a Gamefound crowdfunding campaign launching in July. The new trilogy adaptation features thematic corruption mechanics, cooperative modes, and classic mechanics tailored for Tolkien fans.

Stoneblade Entertainment is bringing its classic deckbuilding mechanics to Tolkien territory. According to an interview by Sam Nelson over at Polygon, former Magic: The Gathering pro and Ascension creator Justin Gary is launching a crowdfunding campaign on Gamefound this July for Ascension: Lord of the Rings. After seventeen expansions set in the original fantasy realm of Vigil, the studio is taking a page out of the modern card game playbook by applying its proven engine to one of the most foundational IPs in fantasy history. Gary noted in his interview that the transition felt natural, given how much modern fantasy owes to Middle-earth.

The upcoming set adapts the familiar core loop of recruiting heroes and defeating monsters from a shared center row, but weaves mechanical shifts around the themes of fellowship and temptation. A new corruption mechanic tied to the Eye of Sauron forces players to balance high-risk advantages against endgame point penalties. Iconic characters like Boromir feature abilities that interact directly with this system, letting players lean into narrative moments that mirror the books. Alongside competitive play, the game introduces a cooperative mode where up to four players manage a joint fellowship against a Sauron-controlled deck.

Following the structure of the literary trilogy, the project spans three distinct sets that players can experience independently or combine into a massive crossover experience. Stoneblade also holds the rights to tackle The Hobbit down the line. For a community that treats tabletop nights and digital deckbuilders as essential social spaces, this blend of legacy mechanics and thematic risk management offers a compelling reason to watch the Gamefound page when it goes live this July.
