ARK: Aquatica Surfaces... To a Sea of Skepticism (And a Tiny Trailer!)

The new ARK: Survival Evolved expansion, Aquatica, has a release date, but a short teaser and past controversies have fans questioning its quality and purpose. Seems like Snail Games has some work to do to convince players this expansion is worth diving into.

Right, so ARK: Survival Evolved is getting a new expansion called Aquatica on July 15th, but it's already sailing into some choppy waters. IGN South Africa (thanks, Vikki Blake!) reports that the announcement, and especially the 11-second teaser trailer, have left fans… well, underwhelmed, to put it mildly.

Snail Games, who are developing this one (not Studio Wildcard, mind you – that's important!), describes Aquatica as a “non-canonical side story” where 95% of the gameplay takes place underwater. Ambitious, eh? They're promising new survival mechanics, environmental hazards, and 21 new creatures to tame. Sounds good on paper, doesn't it? But…

Here's where the kraken wakes up. The initial announcement trailer back in March drew flak for allegedly using generative AI imagery. Studio Wildcard was quick to distance themselves, which is fair enough. They're busy with their own ARK projects, like Ark: Lost Colony (another expansion, this time for Ark: Survival Ascended) and the ever-elusive Ark 2. Remember that one?

Back to Aquatica. This time around, the fans are scrutinizing *everything*. Some are even suggesting reporting the game to Steam if they suspect AI involvement. Ouch. And the comments on the YouTube trailer? Let's just say folks are wondering what the point of an 11-second teaser even is. One commenter (and I'm paraphrasing the colorful language here) basically asked, "What the bloody hell does this tell me?"

Another gem: someone reckons the update's designed to kill existing mods and plugins. That's quite the accusation, isn't it? Is it fair? Only time will tell, mate. But it highlights the simmering distrust some players have regarding updates that shake things up.

Aquatica, by the way, is being developed by Studio Sirens to “commemorate the 10-year anniversary of ARK: Survival Evolved”. It's a PC exclusive, and there's no price yet. So, what's the takeaway here? Hype is earned, not given, and a tiny trailer probably isn’t the best way to win over a wary community. Especially when there's lingering baggage from previous AI accusations.
