Arise Dark Lord Blends Action RTS Mechanics With Classic Fantasy Map Aesthetics

Arise Dark Lord is an upcoming action-RTS hybrid where players command undead armies and build evil fortresses on a classic fantasy map. A playable prototype is available now ahead of a 2027 release.

Playing the hero is fine, but sometimes you just want to build an unstoppable undead horde and wipe humanity off the map. According to a recent report by Rock Paper Shotgun, developer Introversion Software is scratching that villainous itch with Arise Dark Lord, an upcoming action-RTS hybrid that casts you as a traditional big bad. You take direct control of the Dark Lord himself, exploring a sprawling overworld that heavily channels the illustrative aesthetic of classic high fantasy map art.

The gameplay itself is an ambitious mix of real-time strategy, tower defense, and base building. Players must construct and defend their own evil fortress using cursed traps and barricades, while simultaneously commanding armies of wights to lay waste to human settlements. As you progress, you can collect powerful relics to enhance your sorcery and instantly turn fallen enemies into fresh recruits for your expanding legions.

While the full release is not slated until 2027, strategy fans do not have to wait that long to see how the mechanics come together. A playable prototype is currently live on itch.io, and the project is available to wishlist on Steam. It is a refreshing spin on traditional RTS design, giving players the mechanical depth of resource management and base defense wrapped in a delightfully wicked power fantasy.
