Anthem Fan Revival Project Faces Its Biggest Test With EA's Frostbite Engine

Modders attempting to revive BioWare's shuttered live service game Anthem via private servers reveal that EA's Frostbite engine is the primary hurdle standing in the way of a full community comeback.

The dedicated community keeping multiplayer titles alive through private servers is tackling one of the most high profile casualties of the live service era. A team of modders and tinkerers operating out of a Discord community known as The Fort's Forge have shared new details regarding their ongoing efforts to bring BioWare's exosuit shooter Anthem back online following its official shutdown earlier this month. While a recent demonstration video showcased early success in emulating basic player authentication and inventory tracking systems, the core gameplay infrastructure remains a massive question mark.

According to team members speaking with Ars Technica, the primary roadblock involves wrangling EA's notoriously complex Frostbite engine. While the group has successfully separated the game architecture into basic authentication, web services, and the multiplayer engine, getting Frostbite to cooperate outside of official servers is proving difficult. Team member Ness199X highlighted unpredictable engine behavior during map tests, noting that NPCs fail to load on some maps while appearing normally on others, with no clear reason yet identified.

Despite these hurdles, the team currently estimates a 75 percent chance of eventual success. However, the timeline and ultimate feasibility depend entirely on how deep the engine's architectural quirks go. If untangling the Frostbite dependencies requires an exponential increase in workload, the project could stall out. For now, the community is urging patience as they navigate the realities of modern game preservation, proving once again that players are often the last line of defense for digital ownership when publishers pull the plug.
