Amazon Prime Video's God of War series is recasting Kratos after lead actor Ryan Hurst suffered a severe bicep tear during filming, forcing the production to scrap four completed episodes and restart shooting in October.
Amazon Prime Video is hitting the reset button on a major piece of its upcoming God of War adaptation. According to a report by Deadline, actor Ryan Hurst has been forced to step down from the role of Kratos after suffering a severe bicep tear during a stunt sequence in late June. Hurst had already spent months filming in Vancouver, and production had managed to wrap four full episodes before the injury brought the set to a sudden halt. While Hurst is recovering from surgery, the physical demands of the role and the extended timeline for a full return have forced studios Sony and Amazon to make a difficult call.
Waiting out a recovery of this magnitude could have stalled production well into 2027, a timeline that proved untenable for the studios backing the multi-million dollar series. Rather than holding out, producers elected to recast the iconic Spartan and aim for a production restart this coming October. Unfortunately, this means the four episodes already in the can will largely need to be reshot with the newly cast lead. It is a tough break for Hurst, who is well known to gaming fans for his stellar physical performance as Thor in God of War Ragnarok, and who recently appeared in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
For the community, this kind of heavy production reset always sparks anxiety about the final product, especially when adapting beloved source material into live-action television. Video game adaptations live and die by their casting and their ability to capture the weight of the original character journeys. As cameras prepare to roll again this autumn, fans are left waiting to see who will step into the ashes of the Ghost of Sparta. You can read the original reporting over at Polygon.
