Amazon's 'God of War' Series: More Than Just a Norse Remake? Bloody Hell, Could We See Sparta?

Amazon's 'God of War' TV series will stick to the 2018 reboot's tone but might sprinkle in some Greek mythology goodness, with Cory Barlog himself lending a hand – here's hoping it's not another soulless adaptation!
Right, so Amazon's diving deeper into the world of angry gods and angrier dads. According to Eurogamer, Ronald D. Moore (the bloke who worked on Battlestar Galactica, no less!) is showrunning the 'God of War' TV adaptation, and it sounds like it's going to be more than just a rehash of the 2018 game.
Moore spilled the beans at San Diego Comic-Con, saying the show will largely stick to the spirit of the 2018 reboot. “This world and this universe are really rich, and it's interesting, and it's really been fun to adapt,” he told Collider. But here's the kicker: he hinted that we might see flashbacks to Kratos's *Greek* days. You know, back when he was a Spartan rage machine carving a swathe through Olympus? Colour me intrigued!
Now, I’m not saying we’ll get full-on retellings of the original games (though, fair dinkum, wouldn't that be wild?). But even a few nods to the old Greek saga could add some serious depth to the story. It would give us a better sense of just how far Kratos has come – and just how much baggage he's carrying (aside from Atreus, obviously).
And speaking of baggage, it sounds like Cory Barlog, the genius behind the 2018 'God of War' and 'Ragnarök', is heavily involved. Moore mentioned that Barlog is a walking encyclopedia of 'God of War' lore. "I've had several meetings with Cory, and you ask Cory, 'Well, tell me about the backstory of this or how this works', and he just can talk because he holds it all in his head,” Moore said. Which is reassuring, because nobody wants a 'God of War' show that butchers the source material more than Kratos butchers, well, everything.
Of course, it’s still early days. The scripts are being written, and filming isn't expected to start until 2026 at the earliest, Eurogamer reports. Blimey, that's a wait! But a second season has already been greenlit. And even though the original team went through a shakeup, key folks like Asad Qizilbash and Hermen Hulst are still onboard.
So, what does this all mean? It means Amazon is betting big on 'God of War'. It means we're (probably) getting a faithful adaptation with the potential for some juicy callbacks to the original Greek games. And it means I'll be refreshing my Amazon Prime account every day until 2026.
Let’s just hope they don’t try to shoehorn in any bloody NFTs. That’d be a real tragedy.
