Amazon's upcoming live-action God of War series on Prime Video has cast God of War Ragnarök Thor actor Ryan Hurst as Kratos, with a premiere window set for 2027.
The search for Prime Video's live-action God of War lead is officially over. According to a report by Polygon, Amazon has cast Ryan Hurst, known for his work in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, to portray the iconic Spartan warrior Kratos. Fans of the franchise already know Hurst well, as he delivered a BAFTA-nominated performance voicing the Norse god Thor in 2022's God of War Ragnarök. Prime Video has already locked in a two-season order for the adaptation, ensuring the creative team has plenty of room to explore the scope of the mythos.
The series will focus primarily on the Norse era of the franchise, following Kratos and his ten-year-old son Atreus as they set out to spread the ashes of Faye from the highest peak of the nine realms. While Christopher Judge famously defined the modern era of the character in Santa Monica Studio's 2018 soft reboot and its sequel, bringing in an actor with direct ties to the universe is an interesting pivot. No additional casting announcements have been made yet, meaning we are still waiting to see who will step into the roles of Atreus, Mimir, and Freya.
Behind the camera, the project has some serious heavy hitters attached. Ronald D. Moore of Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind fame is serving as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Meanwhile, Fallout and Shōgun veteran Frederick E.O. Toye is slated to direct the first two episodes. Co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, the series is currently scheduled to premiere on Prime Video in 2027.
