Amanita Design Drops a Playable Demo for Its Hand Crafted Cardboard Puzzler Phonopolis

Amanita Design has released a PC and Mac demo for Phonopolis, an upcoming hand crafted cardboard puzzle adventure about fighting an authoritarian regime using sound and environmental manipulation.

Amanita Design, the studio behind distinct indie adventures like Machinarium and Creaks, has officially released a playable demo for their upcoming 3D puzzle game Phonopolis. Players step into the shoes of a young man named Felix as he navigates a surreal city ruled by an authoritarian leader. Armed with headphones that protect him from sonic mind control, Felix must stop the regime from broadcasting the Absolute Tone. That catastrophic event threatens to permanently strip the citizenry of their humanity.

As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, the gameplay leans heavily into the physical nature of its setting. Felix can turn walls, shuffle floors, manipulate machinery, and tear paper curtains to solve environmental puzzles. Players can even repurpose the very loudspeakers used to subjugate the population, turning the regime's tools back against it. The aesthetic relies entirely on physical, hand painted cardboard sets with animations capped at 12 frames per second to evoke a classic stop motion feel.

That striking look draws deep inspiration from interwar avant garde art movements like constructivism, futurism, and suprematism, specifically examining how those styles intersect with propaganda. For players looking to sample unique indie design ahead of the full launch later this year, the demo is available now on Steam for PC and Mac. You can check out the original coverage over at Rock Paper Shotgun.
