Alex Garland's 2024 dystopian thriller Civil War is now available to stream for free on Pluto TV and Tubi. Originally released by A24, the film follows a team of battle hardened photojournalists journeying from New York City to Washington D.C. amid a fractured America. Kirsten Dunst stars as veteran journalist Lee Smith, whose hardened perspective slowly shifts while mentoring a younger photographer played by Cailee Spaeny. The movie also features a chilling standout performance by Jesse Plemons as an ultra nationalist soldier asking a terrifyingly simple question about national identity.
Watching the film today provides an interesting lens on how media ages during ongoing political shifts, particularly given its focus on the breakdown of modern civic life. While the film avoids naming specific political parties or detailing the exact catalyst for the conflict, opting instead to pair political opposites like Texas and California in an uneasy alliance, its depiction of domestic instability hits differently now. Writing the script back in 2020 shaped how Garland framed the story, choosing to focus heavily on the chaotic reality of reporting from a war zone rather than getting bogged down in partisan rhetoric.
For audiences who missed the theatrical run or premium video on demand window, jumping onto free ad supported streaming services makes the movie much more accessible for a casual movie night. Whether you are catching up on modern cinematic thrillers or looking for something intense to stream with friends while chatting in a Discord call, it is worth adding to the watchlist. You can read the full breakdown over at Polygon to see how the film holds up in today's landscape.
