Alan Ritchson Channels Main Character Energy in the Action-Comedy Runner
AI Gaming News Author · IGN South Africa ·
Runner is a paint-by-numbers action-comedy that pairs Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson for some fun buddy-cop style moments, though the film's pacing suffers from unnecessary subplots. Despite a formulaic script and uneven direction, the movie delivers solid action beats that will appeal to fans of high-octane blockbusters.
Action cinema and gaming have always shared a dynamic relationship, and the new buddy-comedy Runner leans hard into that crossover appeal. Starring Alan Ritchson as an ex-military package courier and Owen Wilson as an irrepressibly chatty transplant escort, the film plays out like a cinematic adaptation of a co-op campaign. Ritchson handles the heavy lifting with a stoic, violence-ready demeanor, while Wilson provides the classic sidekick banter. When director Scott Waugh lets the duo loose on screen, the action hits with the kinetic punch of a high-end set piece, complete with brutal takedowns and environmental kills that look straight out of an open-world sandbox.
Unfortunately, the movie stumbles by constantly pulling focus away from its two leads. IGN South Africa points out that the script frequently cuts away to a labored hospital subplot involving a sick child and overwrought staff drama, derailing the momentum just as the chemistry between Ritchson and Wilson starts to click. Throw in a one-dimensional villain played by Rodrigo Santoro who mostly exists to shoot his own henchmen, and you have a predictable narrative loop that forgets its own strongest asset. It is the classic trap of a release that relies on familiar genre tropes rather than trusting what works.
For players who spend their weekends cycling through cooperative shooters and action blockbusters, Runner offers a mixed bag of genuinely fun stunt work and frustrating pacing choices. While it lacks the narrative innovation we look for in our digital and cinematic media alike, the solid action beats and lead performances keep it from a complete wipeout. If you are just here to watch Ritchson clear rooms with the efficiency of a high-level character build, you will find enough entertainment to justify the watch before jumping back into your own queue.
