Adult Swim has confirmed that Rick and Morty season 9 will premiere on May 24, releasing new first-look images and teasing some of the most ambitious writing in the show's history.
Fans of multiverse chaos and existential dread can finally mark their calendars. Adult Swim has announced that Rick and Morty will officially return for its ninth season on May 24. Alongside the premiere date, the network dropped a fresh batch of first look images, giving us a glimpse into the bizarre domestic mishaps and high concept sci fi nonsense we can expect from the upcoming episodes.
According to Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, the writing team is operating at an unprecedented level. Series creator Dan Harmon and showrunner Scott Marder actually wrote seasons 8, 9, and 10 all in one massive block. Harmon even teased to Polygon that season 9 features a narrative swing he has wanted to pull off in television or film for his entire career. Given the show's history of turning characters into Cronenberg monsters and diving deep into toxic family dynamics, the bar for weirdness is set pretty high.
Judging by the preview stills, the new season will balance grounded absurdity with classic multiversal exploration. We see Rick wrestling Morty in the garage lab, rampaging through a miniature town of gnome creatures, and heading out for an alien forest camping trip. There is also a moody, snow covered shot of a mysterious figure stepping out of a wrecked RV, pointing toward a spooky standalone episode that creator fans will likely be picking apart on Reddit and YouTube within minutes of airing.
