Adapting Frosthaven to PC: How Snapshot Games Tackled Board Game Complexity

Snapshot Games explains the challenges of translating the complex board game Frosthaven into a digital experience, addressing rule enforcement, player feedback, and onboarding new players.

Adapting a massive, rules heavy tactical board game for digital platforms is never a simple task. When Snapshot Games set out to build the digital version of Isaac Childres’ hit dungeon crawler Frosthaven, the team took an immersive approach. According to an interview with Polygon by Sam Nelson, game director Hristo Petkov had his team split into groups of four to play through a full physical campaign over several months. This hands on immersion let the development studio grasp the intricate design philosophy behind the tabletop original before writing code for the PC release.

The transition has already sparked some lively debates within the community since the game entered early access in July 2025 ahead of its full launch on October 15. Some Steam players have criticized the game for being overly punishing, but Petkov points out a funny reality of tabletop adaptations. The digital version simply enforces the rules strictly, whereas physical players often misinterpret rules at the table and unknowingly make things easier for themselves. To bridge that gap, Snapshot is implementing flexible options, including house rules and a helpful undo function.

At the same time, the developers want to welcome newcomers who might find the card based mechanics intimidating. Under the guidance of CEO and XCOM creator Julian Gollop, the team worked with Childres to create a four mission introductory campaign called The Road to Frosthaven. They even built an optional story mode that temporarily removes the strict card exhaustion mechanic, giving modern tactical RPG fans a gentler ramp before diving into the core experience.
