Activision has issued a rare denial addressing recent rumors that a standalone Call of Duty Zombies game was in development for the next-generation Xbox console.
The Call of Duty rumor mill runs non-stop, but Activision just stepped in to kill one of the biggest community whispers of the year. According to a report by Tom Phillips at IGN South Africa, the publisher issued a rare and direct response to shut down claims that a standalone Call of Duty Zombies game was in active development. The speculation started earlier in the week when prominent community leaker TheGhostofHope posted on social media that Activision was quietly preparing two separate Call of Duty titles to anchor the launch of Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console, which analysts currently expect around 2027.
For a mode with a community as dedicated as Zombies, a standalone release sounds like an absolute dream on paper. Fans have spent well over a decade navigating convoluted Easter eggs, survival maps, and dark narrative arcs, often wishing the experience had room to breathe outside of the yearly mainline multiplayer cycle. A dedicated platform for round-based survival and co-op progression could easily become a massive streaming staple and a long-term hub for content creators. Yet, Activision breaking its usual silence to quickly wave away the report suggests that kind of standalone project is simply not in the cards right now.
While getting official confirmation that a project does not exist is usually a bit of a downer for hopeful fans, it also saves the community from years of misplaced hype. Call of Duty continues to evolve across mobile, console, and PC, balancing annual tentpole releases with massive live-service ecosystems like Warzone. For now, the undead will have to stay right where they are, tucked inside the standard Treyarch development cycle rather than branching out into their own standalone title.
