IGN South Africa reports that the sequel to Mojang's sandbox adaptation is officially titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, with a July 2027 release date and new cast members including Kirsten Dunst.
Hollywood is leaning further into game adaptations as the definitive blockbuster era of comic books cools down. Proving that momentum is real, the cast of the upcoming sequel dropped in during the recent Minecraft Live event to share a behind the scenes look at production and confirm the official title. According to IGN South Africa, the follow up to Mojang's live action sandbox adaptation will officially be called A Minecraft Movie Squared.
Fans tuning into the broadcast got a solid look at what is coming when the movie hits theaters in July 2027. Returning favorites like Jack Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garrett, and Danielle Brooks as Dawn appeared in the reveal video alongside some major new additions to the ensemble. Most notably, Kirsten Dunst is joining the cast as Alex, fulfilling a public wish she previously shared to be part of the franchise.
For a community that has watched Minecraft dominate digital spaces and creator streams for over a decade, seeing the cinematic universe expand is fascinating territory. While video game adaptations used to be treated with heavy skepticism, studios are finally nailing the right balance of fan service and accessible storytelling. We will have to wait and see if the sequel can replicate the cultural footprint of the original, but the production team is clearly pulling out all the stops to keep players engaged both on screens and in theaters.
