A Lost Nintendo 64 Shooter is Finally Playable After 25 Years

A canceled Nintendo 64 rail shooter called Viewpoint 2064 has finally surfaced and become playable 25 years after its disappearance, thanks to dedicated game preservation efforts and an anonymous discovery.

Game preservation has rescued another piece of unreleased history. According to a report by Ed Nightingale at Eurogamer, the canceled Nintendo 64 shooter Viewpoint 2064 is finally playable a quarter of a century after it vanished from the public eye. Originally planned as a follow up to the classic Neo Geo arcade space shooter Viewpoint, developer Racjin shifted the perspective from isometric action to a 3D rail shooter heavily reminiscent of Star Fox and Panzer Dragoon.

The project first appeared at Nintendo's Spaceworld event in 1999 before disappearing without a formal cancellation notice. For decades, its fate remained a mystery. The preservation landscape changed when the YouTube channel Hard4Games received a beta build in 2020. Now, an anonymous contributor has provided the channel with a final master cartridge, allowing the team to document the differences and make the game available for players to download and experience today.

Stories like this highlight why community-led preservation is so vital for the medium. Commercial storefronts and digital storefront closures frequently threaten gaming history, making the work of archivists essential for keeping playable history alive. For those looking for more action in that same nostalgic vein, developer Giles Goddard is currently working on a spiritual successor titled Wild Blue.
