2024 Pokemon World Champion Locked Out of This Year's Tournament After Store Dispute

2024 Pokemon VGC champion Luca Ceribelli and two other players were locked out of the 2026 World Championships due to a merchandise line dispute and a badge replacement technicality.

Competitive integrity usually means getting knocked out in the Swiss rounds or falling short in the top cut. For reigning 2024 Masters Division champion Luca Ceribelli, however, his exit from the 2026 Pokemon World Championships in San Francisco happened before he even touched a controller. According to a public statement reported by Dexerto, Ceribelli and fellow competitors Ruben Gianzini and Luca Lussignoli had their event passes confiscated following an incident near the official merchandise line, effectively barring them from the entire competition on a technicality.

The trouble started when Ceribelli and Lussignoli allowed Gianzini to cut into the line with them. Ceribelli noted that Gianzini deals with a documented disability that makes packed, crowded spaces exceptionally difficult to navigate. While the players accepted a store ban from the Pokemon Center for the infraction, security staff reportedly took their badges with the assurance that replacement passes could be printed for the main tournament. Unfortunately, staff later informed the players that confiscated badges could not be reprinted, locking them out of the venue entirely despite facing no official competitive suspension from The Pokemon Company.

Missing the San Francisco event stings all the more given Ceribelli's status in the community. As the 2024 VGC champion whose Farigiraf earned a commemorative Mystery Gift distribution last year, his absence left a notable gap in the bracket. It also meant he missed the historic rollout of the circuit's new platform transition. Ceribelli stated that the ordeal has left him questioning his future in the competitive scene, putting a frustrating end to what should have been a triumphant return to the world stage.
