007 First Light on PC drops the stutter, but advanced frame gen needs a rethink

Early PC performance tests for 007 First Light show significant improvements over its stuttering reveal footage, though aggressive new DLSS 4.5 frame generation modes introduce unwanted artifacting and input lag.

When IO Interactive first showed off 007 First Light, the technical showcase arrived with some very noticeable framerate dips during heavy action sequences. It was an unusually honest look at a work in progress, but it left players wondering how the final release would hold up on desktop hardware. According to early testing from James Archer over at Rock Paper Shotgun, the good news is that the release build is far more resistant to the unpredictable stutters that plagued those early trailers.

Performance does still fluctuate depending on whether James Bond is trading gunfire or moving through dense crowds of NPCs. Testing on an RTX 5050 shows a solid 60fps during infiltration missions, which dips down closer to 45fps during intense vehicle pursuits and airfield shootouts. While those drops happen, they are consistent rather than jittery, making the action much easier on the eyes. Standard upscaling tools like DLSS and FSR pull their weight here, offering substantial framerate boosts whether you are running high-end hardware at 4K or trying to salvage playability on older cards like a GTX 1070.

Where things get complicated is the game's early adoption of Nvidia's new DLSS 4.5 tech, particularly its higher frame generation multipliers and Dynamic MFG modes. While pushing for 4x, 5x, or dynamic settings can technically skyrocket your framerate past 120fps, it introduces noticeable input lag and visual artifacting that distorts fast motion. Sticking to a classic 2x multiplier hits the sweet spot for smooth motion without messing up your inputs. You can read the original hardware deep dive over at Rock Paper Shotgun.
